Selecting and using a boar for service in Pig

Boar is a mature male pig. Boars are selected after performance testing. This is to ensure efficient pigs which will pass on their efficiency to their offspring.

 The efficiency we needs are below
Faster growth rate than others
Get less backfat
Utilization of food better than others
Must have equal size and firmly suspended testicles
Must have good looks, good behaviour and good standing.

A boar should be 7-8 months of age before it can be use for reproduction.

A boar should not be used more than 25 times for service / reproduction per month.

When it reaches 15 month of age, it can be used for reproduction up to 40 times per month..

Mating periods should be spread so that boar can work three times a week with a day interval.

A boar should carry less backfat than gilts, sows and castrates.
A boar should be slim, thrifty in condition ( active and effective).
